During its first full week in session, the congressional leadership did not waste time outlining its top priorities, and one of the top ten was Comprehensive Immigration Reform. By introducing S.9, the “Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009”, Congress is making it clear that they will tackle this thorny issue immediately. |

Victims of Crime Can Apply for a Green Card! |

If you are an undocumented alien AND you have been a victim of crime, then you should know there are important changes taking place in immigration law. Until now, “U” nonimmigrant status was available to aliens who were victims of certain crimes and were being helpful to the investigation or prosecution of those crimes. Although this visa allowed the alien to live and work within the United States, it was a “nonimmigrant” visa. That is, there was no path to a green card or citizenship. This is changing very soon. As of January 12, 2009 The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is amending its regulations to permit aliens in “U” nonimmigrant status to apply for permanent residence – a green card! This is a long-overdue and welcome change to the immigration regulations for people who very much deserve it. |
